Tree commonly known as Carob of the Fabaceae family, or its fruit carob – not to be confused with the African locust bean. It is widely cultivated for its edible fruits, and as an ornamental tree in gardens. The ripe fruit (dried pod) is often grounded into carob powder which is used as a substitute for cocoa powder. It has a sweet unique taste which is why it is commonly used as a natural sweetener in baked goods and pastries.

It is native to the Mediterranean region, including southern Europe, North Africa, the large islands of the Mediterranean; to the Levant and Central-East of western Asia in Iran.

You can find both Roasted and Raw Organic Carob in our range of gluten-free products. When roasted, carob is less bitter in flavour and therefore more popular as a sweetener in food use. Roasted carob is usually chosen for the taste and raw one for health benefits as it is higher in mineral and vitamin content (contains also vitamin D and folic acid). Carob’s energy level is extraordinary (50% natural sugars) and its glycemic index (GI: 15) is extraordinarily low, offering high energy levels and avoiding glycemic peaks and fat accumulation. Ideal for smoothies;

Carob has 10% protein and is rich in calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium and coper among other minerals;

The tannins in carob contain gallic acid that works as an analgesic (pain-killer), antiallergic, antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral and antiseptic. The carob improves digestion and reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood thanks to its polyphenols and dietary fiber;

It is used to treat diarrhea in children and adults alike. The carob is also used against osteoporosis, due to its richness in phosphorus and calcium. The polyphenols in carob are also powerful antioxidants, protecting the body against free radical damage.


Carob powder or flour is frequently used as a substitute for chocolate in sweets, ice cream, cakes, cooking and food. As it has an astringent effect, it is useful in the treatment of diarrhea, gastritis, gastrointestinal ulcer and child vomiting. As it does not contain gluten, it is suitable for coeliacs.
