Although it is called a blue-green algae, spirulina is actually a cylindrical filamentous cyanobacteria, multicellular trichomes in a free floating open helix. They occur naturally in tropical and subtropical lakes with high pH and high concentrations of carbonate and bicarbonate.

Spirulina contains approximately 60% protein (51-71%). It is a complete protein with all the essential amino acids (although with reduced amounts of methionine, cysteine ​​and lysine compared to the proteins of meat, eggs and milk). Still, it is superior to the typical plant protein (such as legume proteins).

The lipid content of Spirulina is approximately 7% by weight, and it is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA). It contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E. It is a great source of iron, potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium and zinc.
